View from the side

We, my husband and I, were walking on the beach this morning and discussing RET and goal setting. While I'm very involved in this usually having an outside perspective to the client or customer's story, Frank is working with colleagues on objectives which are a mixture of personal and business elements.

The question Frank asked, is whether is better to have an outside perspective because it does not come with 'baggage'. That is the person helping to determine where you are going and what are the issues is free from emotional attachment (like of people or tasks or the environment) and free from having dependencies (need the money, can't do this because ..). Which makes it easier to ask why, how, and what and by doing so peel the issue free from the surrounding pieces.

On the other side being part of the system - as Frank is - makes it a lot easier to understand priorities and business dependencies. But it can come with emotional engagement that clouds the decision making.

In RET it is not important at all being part of or knowing the whole environment of the customer. There is no judgment of any elements coming up, neither importance nor on value. RET is about to release old believe elements and negative attachments and rediscovering new pathways.

Goal settings in comparison is different but has similar elements. It clarifies your way forward. It gives you an objective, something to go out and achieve it. Goal setting is about priorities, it includes where you are and your surroundings. You arrive on a decision where you want to go without judging. That means you are not saying my old way was wrong rather accepting a different way of going forward.
